BERLIN (ICIS)--The crippling supply constraints that have plagued the global methyl methacrylate (MMA) market continue, with little relief on the horizon, which is set to be the key topic for players at 51st annual European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) meeting. It has been a turbulent year for MMA players, with a steady stream of production problems in every region.

With fresh problems emerging last week and no new capacity yet on stream, some players fear that October may be the tightest month year-to-date in Europe.

Last week, Lucite International declared force majeure at its Cassel facility in the UK, on the back of a technical issue at the plant.

European supply was already tight and restricted because of the planned maintenance at Evonik’s Worms, Germany, plant in September.

The impact on sentiment from the force majeure was immediate, and the panic that has swept the market at many points this year present once again, according to industry players.

Spot prices soared this week in the aftermath of the force majeure, with the ICIS range increasing by €200/tonne on 29 September put-europe-at-its-tightest-year-to-date.

The range in spot prices discussed in the market was immense, with some traders offering product with over a €600/tonne spread

-          Methacrylates Force majeure ICIS source/ Lucite and slow restart… https://www.icis.com/resources/news/2017/09/22/10145679/lucite-international-declares-force-majeure-on-mma-at-cassel-uk/

22 September 2017 13:25 Source ICIS News LONDON (ICIS): UK-based methyl methacrylate (MMA) producer Lucite International has declared force majeure (FM) on methacrylate monomers at its Cassel facility in the north of England, market sources said on Friday. In a letter to customers seen by ICIS, Lucite said it regretted to inform customers that as a result of an unforeseen technical issue at the Cassel site it had no option but to temporarily shut down operations for an as yet unspecified period of time in order to resolve the situation. The dispatch of MMA, methacrylic acid (MAA), and n-butyl methacrylate (nBMA) will be suspended with immediate effect until production at the Cassel site has been restored to a stable position.

Upon resumption of dispatches, available volumes of MMA, MAA and nBMA will be allocated to customers on a fair and reasonable basis, and in accordance with contract agreements. The company tried to assure its customers that it is working to mitigate the impact on business and will continue to update its customers as the situation develops.

Lucite International has the capacity to produce 200,000 tonnes/year of MMA from its Cassel facility in Billingham, northern England. Global MMA supply remains short, on the back of a series of planned and unplanned outages.

MMA is used in the manufacture of acrylic sheet, surface coatings, emulsion polymers and adhesives.

Slow restart

Lucite International has successfully re-started operations at its Cassel Site, and has now resumed the despatch of methacrylate monomers; however inventories remain at very low levels.

Lucite International will therefore lift its declaration of Force Majeure as of 1st November 2017, but will continue to operate a formal sales control process until further notice. Available volumes of MMA, MAA and nBMA will be allocated to customers on a fair and reasonable basis.

Globally, the MMA market remains tight, with an overall shortage of product being seen in each of the three regions and therefore also here in the EMEA region, which continues to require a level of imports to augment EU production and fully satisfy demand. We look forward to the successful commissioning of the new SAMAC MMA plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and will share further news on this as soon as possible.

ELANTAS Europe announced today that effective from October 1st, 2017, as contracts permit, prices for certain Wire Enamels and Lubricants will be increased within Europe by up to 8 percent.

“Prices for raw materials, particularly for MDI, TD I and certain solvents, have been increasing substantial-ly over the last months and a short term release is not expected. This results in an immediate effect on the cost and makes a price increase necessary,” said Dr. Gerd Michael Krämer, Head of Marketing, Sales and T echnology of ELANTAS Europe. “Today, the supply sit uation for some raw materials is extre-mely tight, which drives the prices continuously up. ELANTAS Europe, with the joint forces of ALTANA’s global purchasing team, strives to secure the supply of the products and to improve its production costs to offset higher material costs, but also remains committed to providing its customers leading quality products.”

Depending on product family, region and business field, the price increase will range up to 25 percent, if permitted by existing customer contracts, WACKER noted. This measure is necessitated by rising production expenses due to increasing raw-material and energy costs, the company said. These price adjustments ensure that the WACKER SILICONES business division continues to provide outstanding service and technical support along with consistently high product quality and technological innovations for its customers, the company said.
